I go the same complie problems with GCC 3.3.4 on my P233 with 96M RAM 
when compiling various things (including the kernel) - I ran memtest86 
for 2-3 days with no errors.  I killed the swap space and retested all 
the drives with no change - eventually (this Sunday) I bought a new 
(used) PII motherboard and CPU - now I have no errors ...go figure...  
Oh and it was a new install of Slack 10 - I did not reinstall the OS 
when the new M/B was installed.
